Pat Nelson, a native of Rhode Island, is an active chamber musician in the Northwest and
performs with the Starry Nights Chamber Orchestra, the Skagit Opera, Zephyr Winds,
Impromptu, and the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. Pat joined the Westwood Wind
Quintet in 2002 and appears with them on the Crystal Records label in the complete
recordings of the 24 quintets by Anton Reicha. She has been a featured soloist on
several occasions with the Starry Nights Chamber Ensemble and the Whatcom
Symphony Orchestra performing new works such as Michael Daugherty’s “Dead Elvis”.
As a founding member of the flute and bassoon duo, Impromptu, she has commissioned
new works for that ensemble and is working on a CD of Contemporary works for Flute
and Bassoon. In 2004, Impromptu won the chamber music competition hosted by the
National Flute Association and performed at the NFA conference in Tennessee. They
have also performed at the International Double Reed Convention in Indiana. Pat
maintains a private studio in Bellingham, Washington and is a frequent adjudicator at
competitions in the Northwest. She has been guest artist and instructor at Musicfest in
Wales, the Utah State Music Camp and Summer Sounds in Washington. Pat received a
Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina, a Masters of Music from
Northwestern University and post-graduate studies at the University of Arizona. Her
teachers include John Pederson, Robert Barris, and William Dietz.
